lululemon athletica purchased the building where they had been leasing space for their head office operations, resulting in formerly multi-tenant ground floor space becoming available for transformation into their new main reception, conference area and amenity facility for the staff. Gustavson Wylie Architects was engaged to create the vision for this transformation. David Hanson led a team of six staff through the entire process from conception through completion from visioning, the approval process, production of contract documents, coordinating consultants, tendering and construction administration.
The space was entirely reshaped to create a dramatic entrance off the main street, guiding the visitor directly to the reception desk, waiting area and public meeting spaces. A new convenience stair was designed to connect the ground floor with the working spaces above. The stair is anchored with a three storey living wall reaching up into the atrium through the staff work spaces. All of the meeting and training rooms are oriented to open into the atrium to connect and transform into a collaborative team environment.
In addition to the public spaces, a staff amenity facility was part of the program, located in the south half of the floor. This area includes a full sized yoga studio, meditation room, workout room and complete spa inspired shower and changing facilities. As these new spaces become occupied, I have continued to work with lululemon to reconfigure the spaces on the upper floors, to reorganize the building to maximize use for the 800+ employees, in addition to upgrading the washrooms and elevator lobbies.
This project was featured in an on-line article on the Office Snapshots website and was a finalist in the SBID international design awards.
